MA in Fine Art and Design - Media, Art, Design & Technology (MADtech)
The Frank Mohr Institute (FMI) at Minerva Art Academy offers an international Master of Arts in Fine Art and Design, with two study programmes to choose from: Painting and MADtech - Media, Art, Design & Technology. Both studio-based programmes, being open 24/7, span two years and comprise 120 credits (ECTS). Each curriculum has its own distinct focus, in the field of painting, on the one hand, and in technologically mediated relationships in society, on the other. Their common ground is that both reinforce the artistic professional in a rapidly changing society. As an independent artist, designer or performer, you will leave your mark in a technologically charged world – by reflecting on your professional role, always asking critical questions, investigating a world in transition or improving quality of life across the world.

Media performers, artists and designers doing strange and unexpected things with technology: that is what the MADtech study programme is about. You are expected to employ and artistically explore hybrid technologies in order to imagine, interpret and change human interaction with a transforming world. To do so, you apply a tinkering playfulness and an experimental mentality, which are the key aspects in your development and research. This mentality, combined with a critical reflective attitude and conceptual skills, leads to unexpected perspectives and results in artistic multimedia, experimental design or performative work in any combination.

Hybrid practice
The MADtech community of practice represents a hybrid approach and a mixture of contemporary art forms, including autonomous, applied and performing arts. The projects you focus your artistic practice and research on, along with the manner in which you display or embed the outcomes, defines what sets you apart from other professionals working in this domain. At the same time, you share experiences and technological developments with your peers in a collaborative, experiment-encouraging work environment. In this situation, the artistic process provides direction to multiple patterns of research. These patterns strengthen the artistic process and enlarge your future field of work. Within the MADtech programme, you can combine or specialize in one or more research areas within the fields of media, arts and design, which are held together by artistic technology research. These research areas are the overlapping fields of Experimental Arts, Experimental Design and Experimental Media Performance Research.

Experimental Arts, Experimental Design & Experimental Media Performance Research
MADtech is looking for autonomous artists, designers or media performers exploring an experimental, cross-disciplinary platform where you extend the boundaries of emerging media, visual and performing arts, and experience design. By tinkering with materials, technology and media, you’ll experiment, develop ideas and enhance your research. In doing so, you explore the possibilities that the cross-section of art and technology has to offer. Throughout this journey the focus lies on your artistic development and attitude towards research. By combining a critical reflective attitude and conceptual skills, you discover unexpected perspectives and explore various possibilities that will result in your graduation project and thesis. You study the influence of human experience and other factors in the field of media, art and design, which range from graphic and interactive design to the creation of new audiences, from product design to the design of public spaces and events. This process will incite and invite unexpected combinations that can result in anything from an experimental audio-visual art and technology festival to interactive installations, animations for quantified self-infographics, a digital wearable fashion show, self-made instruments for a digital orchestra, a nexus of coded audio-visual kitchen performances and so on.

Past, present and future
No matter which research track you’re in, at MADtech we are continually seeking a dialogue between different viewpoints on the past, present and future: between art and science, between theoretical and applied research, stable and unstable media, old and new technologies, and local and global forms of society. This is a group process in which we share our views and ideas, work together and learn from one other. At the same time, you will also embark on your own path, improving your knowledge and skills, and learning to reflect critically on your own position, role and work and on the world around you.

Admission
To be admitted to this study programme, you have to show us what you wish to get out of the programme. We therefore ask you to submit a broad outline of the kind of artistic research that matters to you. What fascinates you about media, art, design and technology? What kind of experiments would you like to carry out? During the admission interview you will discuss your ideas with us. Once admitted, your ideas will form the basis for your next two years.
